Top 5 Textbook Hot Spots for UCSC Slugs!

By Diana Vega on January 19, 2013

All college students know how difficult it is to manage money, especially with textbook prices these days. Thankfully, Santa Cruz and the internet are there to make our lives a little easier by providing ways to avoid these skyrocketing prices!

SlugBooks. This system for selling and buying books is both easy and safe to use. Books are listed by course according to the current UCSC term, so there is no way you could end up with the wrong books for your class! The site provides multiple links to other sites that sell and rent your textbooks which is convenient because it allows you to compare prices. In addition to this, it offers a student exchange program. If the books you need are available, you simply message the student selling the books to arrange a meeting. Meeting on campus is usually the best course of action, that way you meet somewhere public and no one has to go out of their way. Selling books on the site is just as easy as buying them too, and you get immediate cash in return!

The Literary Guillotine. This tiny book shop in Santa Cruz is not only extremely cute, but also extremely student-friendly. Their employees are always helpful and their prices are not too shabby! They usually carry a large number of cheaper, used editions of books so your pockets don’t ache after each visit. My only advice is that you visit The Literary Guillotine as soon as you know which textbooks are required for your classes because they sell quickly!

Chegg. This site also sells and rents books for excellent prices. One of its best features though is that it offers a Homework Help Membership that gives you access to textbook solutions and on demand expert help! The price requested is definitely worth the extra practice and outstanding grades you’ll receive in the long run.

Amazon Student. This is one of my favorites because it gives students free shipping for the first six subscription months. Plus, once you’re subscribed you’re eligible for exclusive student deals!

Half.com. This site’s rental section is relatively new but in full swing! Furthermore, they have a policy which says that when you buy two or more textbooks from the same seller you pay less!

Happy textbook shopping!
