9 Little Ways to Organize Your College Apartment

By Jessi Stickel on December 30, 2015

With the new year and new semester approaching, many people try to start on a fresh page by getting their homes organized. Having an organized bedroom and apartment can make your life so much easier, especially when you are constantly stressed out from the college workload.

You do not necessarily need to reconstruct your whole apartment to get it organized; there are several little things you can add to have everything in your apartment in its place.

Here are several small ways to get your kitchen, bathroom and bedroom organized in your college apartment.

Kitchen

1. Refrigerator containers

Your refrigerator can get pretty sloppy, especially when you have several roommates that eat all kinds of different foods, causing less room. Adding storage containers inside your refrigerator can be the perfect solution to have each roommates’ food separate and be able to find whatever you are looking for right away without having to dig through the whole fridge.

It also allows more space for you and your roommates as well. After using these to organize your fridge, you will actually be able to tell whose food is whose.

2. Shoe organizer for paper towels

College apartments normally do not have a lot of closet space for cleaning supplies like toilet paper, paper towels, brooms, etc. Many college students like to buy things in bulk in order to save money; however, it is difficult when you do not have the space for 10 rolls of paper towels.

You can buy a cheap shoe organizer for paper towel or toilet paper storage that saves a lot of room and makes for easy access. Another tip for utility closets is adding hooks to hang brooms, mops, and dusters.

3. Tack ziplock bags

Some apartments do not have much drawer space in the kitchen as well, which can cause massive disorganization and it’s super annoying when you are in a rush to get to class. This is the cheapest organization hack to try in your kitchen; just tack up your small storage bags on the back of a cabinet or even the wall.

This can give you more room in your kitchen drawers and it is also really convenient for everyone. You can also try this hack with products like foil and parchment paper.

Bathroom

1. Bathroom mason jars

There are so many things you can do with mason jars, and organizing is one of them. Mason jars are the perfect size to organize all the little things on your bathroom counter, such as toothbrushes, Q-tips, cotton balls, toothpaste and floss, makeup, and even hair-ties and bobby-pins.

It gets all the scattered objects off your counter in a neat (and cute) fashion. You can even design the jars yourself using paint, permanent markers, or stickers.

2. Under-the-sink drawers and containers

Under the bathroom sink is probably one of the most disorganized places in anyone’s home because there is only one level to put things. Adding containers, shelves and pull out drawers maximizes the vertical space and allows you to find everything you need within seconds instead of hours.

You can even label the containers by object or by roommate. These shelves are also fairly cheap at most container stores and even some dollar stores carry them. You can also use the back of the cabinet doors for storage as well by installing racks. This organizing tip will most likely take up some time, but it is worth it in the time and hassle you will be saving in the future.

3. On-the-wall towel storage

Some college apartments do not even have a linen closet for towels. This problem can be easily fixed by putting them right in the bathroom using baskets (from the dollar store). This hack does not use up any of your bathroom space since it is on the wall and it actually looks pretty fancy.

If you have different sized towels, try buying different sized baskets, like in the photo above, to make it more presentable. Now you can never forget to bring a towel to take a shower and will never be naked and stranded again.

Bedroom

1. Hang-on-the-wall baskets

Hanging baskets in your bedroom can help you get organized as well. You can hang them on the walls above your desk for books and other school supplies, or hang a larger basket for your scarves and gloves in the winter, or even a basket for your makeup and/or hair products.

This will keep your desk, floor, and table tops clear and neat. If you want to do baskets for school, you can try labeling two different baskets for your classes, “Monday & Wednesday” and “Tuesday & Thursday,” which can keep you on track with your books and assignments.

2. Back-of-the door storage

If you have a closet door that opens, do not waste the potential storage space to keep your bedroom organized. You can easily add bars to hang items on, an over the door hanger, and even make a jewelry holder out of smaller cups and baskets.

Having storage on the inside of your closet door is great because you can hide these items when you shut the door, keeping your room clutter free. This can give you easy access to your everyday accessories and allows you to maximize your space in those tiny college apartment bedrooms.

3. Silverware organizers

You can use silverware storage containers for several things in your apartment bedroom. A great one is using it for makeup storage, considering most girls have several different kinds of mascara, lip color, and more, which can make a table top or drawer messy.

These containers are the perfect size for almost any drawer and will keep everything together and neat. You can also use these containers for school supplies such as pens, sticky notes, highlighters, and even laptop cords and phone chargers.
