How Was Your Spring Break?
Our long time off from school has finally reached its end, which means it is time to see all of our peers that we haven’t seen for nine whole days. In the interest of starting conversations, I would like to bet that the small talk of the week will be, “How was your spring break?”
The thought occurred to me after coming back to school for second semester that I was having the same conversation with almost every single person I caught up with. They all started out with, “How was your break?” It almost seems natural to ask that when talking to peers, and I do not blame anyone for trying to start a conversation. However, I was lazy and answered the question quite robotically every time.
Though you will probably be questioned about spring break multiple times and you feel prepared with your answer of “good,” I encourage you all to reply with some thought and truthfulness. Make this one different than all the rest. That, my friends, is how you carry on a conversation.
If your spring break was really boring, say that and tell them why. Chances are there is some ironic humor behind the fact that the highlight of your break was that you got all of your homework done.
If it truly was good, be prepared with reasons or stories. Like I said, do it for the sake of the conversation. You did something right with your time off; others will be intrigued with ideas that they might be willing to take on. Though there is a line to draw when it comes to outright bragging, Spring break is a hot topic right now that people want to hear about.
So, when there is nothing else to say, don’t hold back from spring break small talk. It is possible to have an intriguing conversation out of such a simple question.
Plus, it will probably lead to talking about exciting plans for spring break 2016. That is a topic I am sure everyone is more than happy to fantasize about.
