Increase Your Reading Speed To Read A Book In Less Than 90 Minutes

By Jennifer Zhang on March 9, 2014

From Easy Mac-n-Cheese to electronic textbooks, students are always looking for ways to make their busy lives easier and faster. In the struggle for increasing efficiency, Spritz may have taken the race to a whole new level.

The Boston-based company is planning to release an app that helps users read faster by streaming words onto a screen, one at a time, and saves users the trouble of moving their eyes. This type of visual presentation is by no means new technology. But what Spritz does differently is position the words so that they line up with the eye’s natural reading motion.

English is actually a very hard language to read. About 40% to 50% of the time, readers focus their eyes on different letters. 10% to 15% of eye movements are not spent reading new text, but rereading text you missed. Every English word has an Optimal Recognition Point (ORP), which is the point where our brain deciphers each mashup of letters and understands the word.

The revolutionary thing about Spritz is that it identifies the ORP of each word, makes that letter red, and lines up all of the ORPs at the same space on the screen. This way, our eyes don’t actually move to read the words – the words move instead. This method allows us to skip over time spent decoding each word, and allows us to process information instantly.

So next time you’re up at 3 am because you’ve left a 100-page reading for the last minute, give this app a try, and it could help you finish that readingand get to bed before the sun comes back up.
